Safety Skill of the Month

At Little Woodlands, children’s safety and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. Our Safety Skill of the Month programme has been thoughtfully developed to help children build awareness, confidence and practical skills that support them to stay safe in their everyday lives.

Each month, we focus on a specific safety theme that is relevant, age-appropriate and meaningful to young children. These include areas such as road safety, fire safety, water safety, and stranger awareness. The sequence of these skills has been carefully planned across the year to reflect seasonal changes, real-life experiences, and key safeguarding priorities.

We recognise that young children learn best through repetition, play and real-life experiences. For this reason, safety skills are not taught in isolation, but are embedded throughout daily routines, play and interactions.

For example, during Water Safety, children explore how water moves through pouring and filling activities. During Animal Safety, children learn how to approach animals gently and understand the importance of giving them space, particularly during our enrichment experiences. In Kind Hands & Safe Bodies, children are supported to understand personal boundaries, use gentle hands and recognise that their body belongs to them. These experiences are reinforced through play, real-life situations and consistent language, helping children build confidence and apply their understanding in meaningful ways.

We have chosen these themes to reflect both everyday experiences and important life skills, ensuring children are prepared not only within the nursery environment, but beyond it. Our approach is always calm, supportive and age-appropriate, helping children feel safe and empowered.

By introducing these skills early, we are supporting children to develop the lifelong safety awareness, independence and wellbeing.
