Storybook of the Month

At Little Woodlands, we believe that stories are a powerful way to support children’s learning, development and emotional wellbeing. Our Storybook of the Month approach is designed to immerse children in high-quality, carefully chosen texts that are revisited, explored and brought to life through a range of meaningful experiences.

We follow a carefully planned two-year cycle of high-quality storybooks, designed to cover a wide range of themes and learning opportunities. This ensures children are exposed to key topics such as emotions, kindness, diversity, resilience and the natural world over time. By focusing on one core story each month, children are given the time and opportunity to build familiarity, deepen understanding and develop a genuine love of books.

Our storybooks are not simply read, they are experienced. Children may act out stories through role play, explore themes through small world play, create artwork inspired by characters or engage in meaningful discussions about topics in the story.

We carefully select stories with strong, meaningful messages that children can relate to and learn from. Look Up! encourages children to slow down, notice the world around them and value connection with others. The Panda-Badger introduces themes of friendship, kindness and supporting others through change. The Rainbow Fish supports children in understanding sharing, friendship and how our actions can make others feel. The Rhythm of the Rain introduces children to the natural world, helping them understand cycles, change and their connection to the environment.

These stories are explored through discussion, play and creative experiences, allowing children to build a deeper understanding of both the story and its message.

We carefully choose books that are inclusive, engaging and rich in language, ensuring all children see themselves reflected and feel a sense of belonging. This approach supports early literacy skills while nurturing curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong enjoyment of reading.
